8BitDo's New Mod Kit Turns Your Wired N64 Controller Wireless

May 16, 2023

If you have an N64 controller and want to repurpose it, 8BitDo has released a new mod kit that allows you to transform your wired N64 controller into a wireless gamepad.

Introducing 8BitDo Mod Kit for Original N64 Controller. Easily modify your original wired N64 controller into a Bluetooth controller, bring wireless compatibility with Switch and Android. Including Hall Effect Joystick and Rumble Pack. Get yours here -https://t.co/cYGgHNIndU pic.twitter.com/6bsf88xOwG

As the name implies, the 8BitDo Mod Kit for Original N64 Controller allows you to swap the controller's mainboard and replace it with a new one that will allow the controller to have Bluetooth functionality. The company also made a Hall Effect Joystick replacement for the N64 controller. As a quick refresher, Hall Effect joysticks use a magnetic system, meaning the joystick never physically touches the sensor itself and, in turn, increases the lifespan of the joystick.

The most interesting part about the mod kit is that the rechargeable battery is integrated into the replacement N64 Rumble Pack. Not only does it offer vibrations, but it includes additional control buttons, plus a USB-C charging port for you to charge the controller.

8BitDo originally started making mod kits for a few years, allowing people to extend the life of retro controllers they own, such as the Nintendo Entertainment System or the original PlayStation. It's also a good alternative for those who want to use their N64 controller to play N64 games on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack without buying the $49.99 wireless N64 controller.

The 8BitDo Mod Kit for N64 is available for $39.99 on the company's website, and it includes the mod kit, the rumble pack, and one Hall Effect joystick. However, you can buy the mod kit and rumble pack separately for $29.99. If you want just to swap out the joystick, you can buy that piece separately for $19.99.
