Solar PV Inverters Buyer's Guide 2024
Solar PV inverters need to do more than ever before. Solar PV inverters in 2024 must interact with the grid (UL 1741), offer more options to meet rapid shutdown (UL 3741), and ease the inclusion of battery storage. The 2024 Solar PV Inverter Buyer’s Guide showcases all of that and more — from microinverters to hybrid solar + storage inverters to large-scale PV string inverters.
As part of the 2024 Solar PV Inverter Buyer’s Guide, we asked the 15 manufacturers listed how the latest solar inverter advancements impact other areas of solar PV design, procurement, and long-term performance. Here is some of that product pro insight.
What inverter or MLE innovation has changed larger-scale PV procurement and design? “C&I string inverters are designed with higher MPPT DC input currents up to 30A, which makes these devices adaptable to the rapid changes in solar panel sizes for years and installers don’t have to retrain their crews often,” says Michael Mendik, Country Manager US/Canada, GoodWe. “This means, no concerns about matching optimizers to panel changes. Smart fans, higher frequency power electronics, and sophisticated heat sinks reduce the risks overheating.”
How can inverter selection lower other costs (like BOS or O&M) in C&I? “PV string inverters did not have the communications that were innovated by U.S. MLPE [module-level power electronics] companies where customers received detailed information from each inverter in the field. Now, with utility grid interoperability being the law of the land, PV string inverter monitoring platforms are now 2-way communicating platforms and provide much more granular information from the field. This information will make truck rolls more efficient and cost effective,” says Terence Parker with Solis Inverters.
“Labor costs are reduced thanks to the 4:1 nature of the microinverter pairing with 4 PV modules,” says Jason Higginson, Head of Marketing, North America, APsystems. “This also eliminates the need to install an optimizer or rapid shutdown device at every PV module. Also, since the inverters are located behind every 4th panel, there are no string inverters or parts to mount on a wall or in a utility closet, thereby eliminating the labor, equipment, and space needed and simplifying the installation.”
“Regarding multi-megawatt ground mount systems, a ‘centralized architecture,’ also known as ‘virtual central’ or sometimes ‘modular central’ designs, where many string inverters are co-located with a transformer near the point of interconnection, minimizes AC line losses and maximizes power delivery to the grid,” says Tyson Schoelzel, strategic sales manager C&I, SMA America. “While a centralized architecture has advantages on CAPEX, like trenching, labor, wire, and balance of system (BOS) costs, it also impacts OPEX.”

What’s new? Northern Electric Power (NEP) added NEPTUNE 3-phase inverters to go with its RSD solutions. In addition, NEP microinverters now have optional integrated WiFi hardware – the key benefit is to eliminate the need for a site gateway which reduces hardware and installation cost. Also, with the NEP Wi-Fi booster, the Wi-Fi inverters connect directly to the home Wi-Fi but independent of the consumer passwords which reduces truck roll and service burden related to consumer password/Wi-Fi changes.
NEP added NEPTUNE 3-phase inverters to go with its RSD solutions. These inverters include fully integrated transmitters and provision for NEP gateway to be installed inside the inverter wire-boxes. Just one gateway is needed to support numerous inverters (wifi, Ethernet and cellular internet connectivity). 5 models; 30kW-208Vac and 33,50,75,100kW-480Vac.
The BDM series involves nimble engineering, better service execution and easier positioning. Fill voids and gaps of content incumbents to generate customer focused value. A key attribute is its metal exterior, which avoids the more common failures associated with plastic module-level power electronics on hot roofs.
NEP’s unique, two-way data communication Rapid Shutdown solution enables installer confidence that rapid shutdown is functioning correctly. This is valuable for safety assurance, code compliance, AHJ approval and characterization of the array performance upon commissioning. Further, NEP includes IV Curve trace ‘service mode’ to enable easier measurements at time of commissioning and through the life of the project. NEP’s optional data gateway is available for remote PV panel diagnostics and data performance.
NEP's Rapid Shutdown units are 20Amp models. The PVG-2 (dual PV) and PVG-3 (3 PV modules) are built with a metal enclosure. Why metal? The industry has seen numerous examples of RSD reliability issues with Non-NEP units. To reduce the risk of such, a metal enclosure improves heat dissipation and overall thermal management. Also, a metal enclosure is more robust, ‘fail-safe’ engineering investment to lower overall risk and improve the expected life-span of the devices. These same units are tested to 25Amp in Europe (CE marking). Lots of design margin with this improvement.

However, this product allows for high voltage PV arrays while configured for wiring to the common 600V 3-phase interconnection voltage.
This inverter features multiple DC disconnects and flexible communications connectivity (Fiber optic, Modbus RS485, Ethernet TCP/IP, PLC). This new inverter also features data recording during ride-through events – 10 millisecond sampling of frequency, AC current, AC voltage, DC current, DC voltage and Fault.
By using multiple PV string inverters to create a larger inverter solution, owners get the redundancy and reliability that PV string inverters bring to the table, while enjoying better performance and less costly OPEX. Solis is continuing to see interest in using our 1000V and 1500V inverters in repowering projects.

The best “combination” Wi-Fi / Cellular data logging communication device on the market. NEMA 3R, plug-and-play connection to the Solis inverter external comm port. Powers up and begins broadcasting with 2 minutes. Default Wi-Fi to the local router. However, if the router fails, within 2 minutes, the W4G “stick” finds the nearest GSM or LTE cellular tower. No breaks in data, ever. Physical reset button and three (3) LEDs on the front tell the installer what the device is doing. The Solis Wi-Fi / Cellular “stick” is a data logging communication tool that can broadcast data from as many as ten (10) Solis residential or commercial PV string inverters daisy-chained with Solis cords or CAT5e cable. The S1-W4G-ST is also a great troubleshooting tool. Using the S1-W4G-ST, an installer can connect any Solis inverter to the nearest cell phone tower and see if the inverter is broadcasting data to the Cloud.

Key specs:
Sol-Ark introduced a line of three-phase hybrid inverters in light commercial 30K-3P-120/208V and industrial 60K-3P-277/480V. Both support 4 MPPTs for dc coupling, ac coupling, generators, UPS grade 200A 5ms auto transfer switch between grid/off-grid/generator, 12 parallel stacking, two independent high voltage batteries, and U.S.-based remote monitoring/control. Previously, 208V ESS applications had to use 480V inverters and massive transformers, wasting power and install time. Most previous C&I hybrids were for on-grid peak shaving or meter zeroing and lacked built-in transfer switches for grid forming. Sol-Ark 30K & 60K is an all-in-one, easy-to-install hybrid inverter for the C&I market.
What’s new? The SolarEdge TerraMax Inverter and SolarEdge H1300 Power Optimizer. Check it out below.
The new SolarEdge TerraMax 330kW Inverter is designed to maximize energy production for any project terrain and for overcoming challenges posed by shading and uneven terrain on community solar ground mount sites. In addition, it is the ideal product for agri-PV, small-medium utility-scale projects and floating PV. It delivers more energy with 200% DC oversizing for up to 50% less Balance of System (BoS) costs (Based on comparisons using HelioScope on 8MW projects and typical string inverters.
